Since 2001, III-FIND has been conducting surveys of current state and level of demand on household broadband. The survey results of 2011 find that the household Internet penetration in Taiwan is 81.8% with 86.6% of the households owing at least 1 computer. Equipped with computers and peripherals, it is estimated a 5.0% growth rate towards household Internet penetration.

Since 2001, III-FIND has been conducting surveys of current state and level of demand on household broadband, applying telephone interviews to describe household Internet state and individual Internet usage behaviors. The results serve as reference source by the government and relevant industries. This article describes household Internet penetration, broadband penetration and relevant indicators of Internet usage.

1. Household Internet penetration

The 2011 survey results show that household Internet penetration in Taiwan is 81.8 %, slightly down 1.0 % from 82.8 % of previous year. The percentage is down while the number of connected homes is actually increased. The estimated number of connected households reaches 6.58 millions, with an increase of 48 thousand households than that of last year. At the same time, there are 17.3 % of households remain unconnected. From changes of household Internet penetration in recent years, Internet penetration rate in Taiwan shows slight growth in 2010 and then remains flat in 2011.

Among all nuclear families, 90.5% are connected to the cyber world, dominating all types of families. And the second come families consisting of siblings, among which 88.4% have Internet access at home. Households with only one member represent the lowest Internet connection, which is 50.0 %.

2. Household broadband penetration
According to the survey results, broadband penetration[Note] in Taiwan households is 80.7%, up 3.6% compared with 77.1% of 2010. Besides, 0.2% of the households use narrowband to connect to the Internet. The estimation of broadband households is 6.49 millions while narrowband adoption is about 15 thousand households.

Nuclear families demonstrate the highest broadband adoption rate, which is 89.7 %, followed by families consisting of siblings at 88.4 %. Families consisting only one member have the lowest broadband adoption, which is 49.5 %.

3. Household computer penetration
With regard to Internet devices, 86.6% of Taiwan households own computers, slightly down 1.2 % compared with 88.0 % in 2010. However, due to the increased number of households nationwide, the estimation reaches 6.98 millions households, with an increase of 42 thousand households compared with the previous year. Most homes own two and one computer(s)., 34.2 % and 27.9 %, respectively. On average, each house owns 2.4 computers, showing slight growth compared with 2.3 computers per house in 2010.

4. Conclusion
Given that 81.8 % of the Taiwan households are connected in 2011 and that 86.6 % of homes own at least one computer, it is reasonable to predict a 5.0 % growth towards household Internet penetration rate. Data collected in the last two years implies stabilization in trend. To further promote Internet connection, the focuses are on households with only one member, those with total income below NT$ 19,999, and residents in eastern Taiwan.

[Note]: Broadband Internet access refers to ADSL, Cable Modem, Leased Line, ISDN, Mobile Network at home, etc.
