The Science & Technology Law Institute (STLI) is a think tank devoted to the development of science and technology laws, interpretation between law and technology, and policies that promote general industry-wide legal systems.
Introduction
In 1989, the Institute for Information Industry (III) established the "Information Law Research Task Force" within its Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) to help Taiwan’s IT industry keep pace with global trends and increase its international competitiveness through the creation of a sound and comprehensive legal and regulatory environment. The creation of such environment was aimed at stimulating the growth of Taiwan's high-tech industries.
In 1996, the status of the task force was elevated through the support of the Technology Development Program (TDP) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the status of the task force was elevated and it became an independent unit under the III, with the name Science & Technology Law Center (STLC) and then Science & Technology Law Institute (STLI) since 2011.
Mission
Since its establishment, the STLI has been a think tank devoted to the development of science and technology laws and policies and has promoted general industry-wide legal systems. Besides serving as the legal consultant for III, the STLI has used its professional legal expertise to provide practical solutions for the government. It also supports the Taiwan government’s efforts to create a strong legal and regulatory environment for the development of science and technology industries and other emerging industries, as well as enable these industries to cope with significant challenges emerging from the development of information, technology and globalization. The goal of these efforts has been to enable Taiwan’s industries to keep pace with international trends and expand global development.
Based on its strengths in policy and legal research, the STLI aims to constantly expand the scope of its international exchanges and cooperation. The STLI pledges to not only become a hub of technology and law, but also become an authoritative research center that promotes links between Taiwan and the global arena.
