Taiwan Collaborates with Japan to Increase the competitiveness of Network & Communication Industry III, NCTU, and OOL Collectively Established SDN Experimental Cross Country Network
Date: 2015/08/10
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is the main stream among the future trends of Internet framework and will bring significant change to the Network & Communication Industry. In the future, the value of hardware will diminish and be replaced by the service value of software. The situation will inevitably trigger the reorganization of the value chain and some challenges are no doubt waiting at the front. As far as the domestic Network & Communication Industry is concerned, which is based on ODM/OEM as the main business, it is a very imperative task to grasp the SDN opportunity so as to facilitate industry upgrade and to apply the strategy of Servitization in Manufacturing to increase the competitiveness of Network & Communication Industry.
In view of the situation, III Smart Network System Institute (SNSI) collaborated with Okinawa Open Laboratory (OOL) to conduct “The Acceleration of Mobile Broad Band Service and Industry Development- the Project of environment construction of 4G+ Internet Connection and Application Testing”. In the project, an experimental cross country SDN Network was constructed and domestic network and communication companies were given opportunities to try out the service. On 10th August, NCTU Network Benchmarking Lab and III collectively held “2015 Japan and Taiwan SDN International Conference” and invited experts from Okinawa Open Laboratory to Taiwan sharing with others their SDN research outcomes and developing experience and assisting Taiwanese companies to gradually enter the Japanese market and the global market.
III Executive Vice President Dr. Pao-Chung Ho indicated that III is the first OOL member in Taiwan area and the two sides cooperated closely with each other. Since last year, III has sent professionals to Okinawa and directly participated in SDN cross country research project so that Taiwan and Japan could improve the SDN technologies together. Okinawa Open Laboratory Director Yukio Ito pointed out that OOL was jointly established by large firms such as NTT, Communications, NEC, and IIGA, etc. It is an open minded international research institute conducting mutual research and development for the next generation Internet technologies and services of the Information and Communication Industry. Further, by the the form of open source, the research results can be proliferated continuously. OOL is pleased to have the opportunity cooperating with III of Taiwan in the field of SDN and works together for the development of Network & Communication Industry of the two countries. Also, OOL welcomes every country to join as a member to contribute its resources.
III Smart Network System Institute (SNSI) Director General Dr. Ming-Whei Feng added that III has long supported the development of domestic SDN industry and previously completed the first multi-brand mutual SDN testing platform in Taiwan which provided for domestic firms SDN testing services. Owing to the opportunity collaborating with OOL to establish cross country SDN experimental network, III can further fulfill the long distance testing requirements of domestic firms under cross country network environment. OOL technical consultant Takashi Torii further pointed out that the experiments conducted previously were mostly confined to a specific location or an identified area so that the testing results were naturally entailed with limitations. The cross country experimental network established this time by the cooperation with III can fully present the successful outcome of the collaboration between Taiwan and Japan. The platform also presents the spirit of the boundaryless Internet and provides an applicable environment for cross country cloud testing or multinational company testing simulation so that the firms of Network & Communication Industry between two sides are provided long distance testing service opportunities.
Under the support of DoIT, Ministry of Economic Affairs, III SNSI held on 10th August “2015 Japan and Taiwan SDN International Conference “and invited III Executive Vice President Dr. Pao-Chung Ho to give a speech.
At“2015 Japan and Taiwan SDN International Conference”, III and OOL held “Japan and Taiwan SDN Cross Country Experimental Network Connection Ceremony”. After the ceremony, III Executive Vice President Dr. Pao-Chung Ho (the 4th from the left), Do IT, Ministry of Economic Affairs Division Director Chia-Hsiang, Chang (the 3rd from the left), III SNSI Deputy Director General Peter Chang (the 1st from the left), NCTU Network Benchmarking Lab Professor Ying-Dar Lin (the 2nd from the left), and OOL President Yukio Ito (the 4th from the right) took a photo together.
