To improve Taiwan's professional ICT education and allow domestic job seekers to be more competitive, the Institute for Information Industry (III) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are introducing online courses developed by IEEE's Computer Society (IEEE CS) to Taiwan for the first time. Today (September 1), III's Executive Vice President Gary Gong and IEEE Division VIII Board Member Dr. Dejan S. Milojicic bore witness to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Dr. Jinn-Bao Lee, Director of the III Digital Education Institute (DEI) and Vice President Tze-Long Chen, a representative for President Roger Fuji of IEEE CS. The MOU symbolizes the seamless integration of Taiwan's professional ICT education with mainstream European and American institutions.
In his address, IEEE CS Vice President Tze-Long Chen addressed that the IEEE as an international association of electrical technologies and engineers with 400,000 members from over 175 countries. He described the IEEE as a leading global organization in professional technologies with branches in over 150 countries as well as 35 professional societies and 2 associations. In recent years, IEEE CS memberships have grown significantly in the Asia Pacific region. The IEEE is pleased to work with the III, a leader of Taiwan's ICT education and certification programs, and welcomes III as a member of the IEEE CS World Partner Program. We hope this will expedite the expansion of networks in the Asia Pacific region.
III Executive Vice President Gary Gong explained that in an era where technologies are rapidly advancing and disruptive innovation continues to change the content and methods of ICT education, providing education materials formulated by IEEE instructors through their years of accumulated experience for III will create online learning opportunities for professionals in Taiwan who are interested in a career in the ICT sector, and it will undoubtedly revitalize professional ICT education in Taiwan.
Currently, III DEI plans involve using IEEE CS online courses as a basis to develop: Students can earn IEEE certifications through online ICT courses in software engineering, programming languages, Internet of Things, and network security offered through 4 main series of 17 courses. These courses will provide young students or working professionals with opportunities to acquire a secondary professional skill, increase their chances for employment, lower employment barriers, while also enhance on-the-job education. Most importantly, it provides access to first-hand information on new technological skills and developments from the West. III will work with IEEE to organize ICT workshops and seminars in Taiwan to increase ICT-related professional knowledge and skills among Taiwanese citizens. In addition, IEEE and III hope to collaborate with Taiwanese universities, and they are exploring the possibility of working with the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University. Once the plan is realized, NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering and III will both offer IEEE courses on software/hardware integration to students and the general public. A tripartite agreement will be completed in the near future.
As a matter of fact, IEEE CS is the largest technical society under IEEE, and it specializes in computer science and technologies; it is also a top professional training institute that helps companies enhance the performance of professionals, attract more talented individuals, and lower costs. IEEE hopes to recruit new members from Taiwan to increase diversity. Through IEEE, Taiwan's citizens will be able to take part in frequently-cited publications, meetings, technical standards, as well as professional and educational activities. III has always been dedicated to the cultivation of talented ICT professionals; over the years, over 450,000 outstanding ICT professionals have received training. IEEE's certified courses will open up employment opportunities for the people of Taiwan. We hope that this innovative measure will open up a new chapter in Taiwan's professional ICT education and bring in exciting new changes!
