Taiwan Developed Smart Glasses Applying Mix Reality for Medical Surgery Attract Discovery to film a documentary.
Date: 2017/02/11
In the past, surgeons applied a large number of X-ray images to improve the accuracy of their surgeries if the operations they will perform require skeletal observation or reset as well as security verification so that clinical Medicare staffs and patients simultaneously exposed to significant amount of radiation, which could do damage to their bodies. For this reason, III collaborated with National Chin-Yi University of Technology, ADE Technology, and A-Spine Asia to collectively come up with a medical surgery solution associated with domestically developed smart glasses that have never been seen previously around the world. The product successfully integrates 3D virtual image fusion technology with wearable devices to solve the problems related to surgical perspective and reduce the errors encountered in the surgical process. The device not only dramatically decreased up to 30% of the surgical time but also attracted Discovery channel to interview and make a special video for it within the program "Taiwan Revealed: Medical Elite" broadcast in 30 different places around the globe.
National Chin-Yi University of Technology Dr. Min-Liang Wang has long dedicated to the researches concerning orthopedic surgery navigation and 3D bone imaging algorithm for auxiliary applications in a medical surgery; ADE Technology is the end product designer and producer of smart glasses; A-Spine Asia is the innovation expert in the field of spin surgery positioning tools and implants. These three domain leaders work in cooperation with a due division of labor to overcome the shortcomings lying in current domestic and foreign surgery guide systems such as the unskillfulness to access to direct vision, the inability to develop pre-operation plan, as well as the incapability to provide various perspectives from different view angles. The team provides customized solution packages in accordance to the requirements of surgeons and the surgical experience from many senior doctors. Currently, smart glasses could be applied to orthopedic trauma, neurosurgery, and spine surgery to fulfill the goal of surgery quality improvement. More imperatively, a well-constructed value chain regarding innovative smart glasses and related supplies should be built in correspond to the modern clinical orthopedic surgery market.
Dr. Min-Liang Wang indicates that the well-designed smart glasses apply mixed reality technologies which integrate X-ray images with digital information and present them simultaneously on the medical glasses. After putting on the glasses, doctors by operation tables could get a clear view of the images of patients' tissues and bones while access to the personal medical information obtained before the operation. By checking the medical information of the patients against their body images, doctors could increase the accuracy of these operations dramatically. So far, there were more than 30 operations executed by applying smart glasses in Show-Chwan Memorial Hospital.
“Industrial Upgrade and Transformation Service Group- Emerging Industry Subgroup” of Ministry of Economic Affairs actively diligently facilitates the development of emerging industries. With the assistance of two major industries in Taiwan-the technology industry and medical industry, Emerging Industry Subgroup successfully established the value chain for the miniaturization of smart glasses as well as set a high entry bar for this domain with advanced technologies. Additionally, it also coached the development team of Taiwan Main Orthopedic to invest in and set up it company in Central Taiwan Science Park. It is estimated that, in 2018, smart glass medical surgery system would obtain official approval and the company would go public simultaneously. Moreover, the company is expected to sign MOU with various overseas agents located in countries including the Philippines, Thailand, UK, and USA, etc.
Taiwan Main Orthopedic has acquired the necessary software and hardware key component and system integration technologies for the production of smart glasses as well as more than 80 key patents associated with medical software and related production know-hows. In the inception of the smart glass business, if the company could strengthen and develop its core application services and try hard to perform the role as one of the most important role in the global smart glass business, there is no doubt that it would stand firmly in the market and become one of the global leading innovative company in terms of smart glass technologies for medical surgery purpose as well as the "Hidden champion" in the industry.
