The Digital Transformation of the Smart Transportation Industry is on its Way!III and ITS Taiwan signs MOU for Future Collaboration. Date: 2020/03/23 Caption: On 23th March, witnessed by the Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Technology of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Der-Sheng Lin (the first from the left) and the Director of the Science and Technology Advisors Office of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Mu-Han Wang ( the first from the right), III President CH Cho (the second from the left) signed MOU with the Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan (ITS Taiwan) President Y. C. Chang, which represents that the two parties will work together to assist companies in their internal overall inspections to accelerate the digital transformation of the ITS industry. In the development of the field of "smart transportation", various designs and equipment can improve the protection of drivers, passengers, and even passers-by all over the world. With the rise of smart Internet of Things (IoT) and people’s higher requirements for life quality, smart Internet of Vehicle (IoV) is now changing the century-old automotive industry. According to the forecast of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), by 2020, about 152 million vehicles will be connected to the Internet, showing that the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) industry, which is a combination of in-vehicle telematics, is a huge potential emerging market with high growth potential in the future. In order to assist in the digital transformation of Taiwan’s ITS industry, the Institute for Information Industry (III) and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan (ITS Taiwan) signed MOU on March 23rd with the Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Technology of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Der-Sheng Lin and the Director of the Science and Technology Advisors Office of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Mu-Han Wang as the witnesses. By clarifying the needs of both the supply and demand sides to find out the problems of transformation, the two parties will assist domestic ITS companies in their digital transformation planning, and proactively play the third party role to fill the gaps between theories and practical situations and aggressively promote the idea of digital transformation. Regarding the cooperation between the two parties, the first stage will focus on serving the industry members of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan (ITS Taiwan). Then, the two sides gradually establish and spread the substantial co-creation of technological cooperation, and create a paradigm of digital transformation of smart transportation with the development of technologies such as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cloud computing, and even blockchain and 5G applications. Further, the two units will extend this service model to other domestic industries, assist the industry in accelerating the process of tapping transformation opportunities, and help economic development. The Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Technology of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Der-Sheng Lin pointed out that digital emerging technologies continue to develop and in recent years, countries all regard digital transformation as the driving force for economic growth. Since the ITS industry is large in scale and has a wide range of technical fields, III has dedicated to the field of in-vehicle communications for many years and is a pioneer in the research and development of domestic in-vehicle technologies. On the other hand, ITS Taiwan not only leads the industry participants to connect with international companies, but also plays a key role in strengthening the transportation industry. It is hoped that this cooperation between the two parties can further accelerate the digital transformation of Taiwan's ITS industry. The Director of the Science and Technology Advisors Office of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Mu-Han Wang indicated in his speech that with the rapid development of information and communication technologies, the progressive form of transportation-"Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)" is no longer a slogan! Now the global ITS competition is not only confined to just hardware, but about how to make use of the latest technologies. Creating sustainable services for people through smart "connections" is an important issue to promote the transformation of the ITS industry. III President CH Cho also believes that in recent years, digital technology has been applied in every aspect. With the rapid development of information and communications technologies, digital transformation has become a top priority. It can be seen from the case of the traditional textile industry that the current industry is facing huge impacts and changes. How to integrate new digital technologies with existing systems to exert combat power is a challenge that every company must face and an important decision that each must make. Since the establishment of the "ACE School" in 2019, III has integrated Taiwan’s long accumulated "soft power" in information development -including new technologies such as AI, data analysis, cloud applications, edge computing, containerized development, or software-defined hardware, and has established the one-stop all service digital transformation model. III hopes that with the dedication from all participants, Taiwan's ITS industry can continue to grow, maintain momentum, and sustain a key position in the world's economic and technological development. The Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan (ITS Taiwan) President Y. C. Chang thinks that in recent years, the ICT and automotive electronics industries have faced growth bottlenecks, and digital transformation has become a topic of global concern. At current stage, the focus is on the ITS industry members, and then ITS will gradually expand the service and establish technical cooperation with professional organizations from different fields to create a paradigm for ITS digital transformation. In the future, ITS Taiwan will spread this service model to related businesses in the industry, accelerate the process of tapping transformation opportunities, and help industry development so that Taiwan's economy could move towards another peak. Major Transportation Policies to Be Implemented, III Encourages Domestic Industries to Invest in Innovative Applications to Meet Public Livelihood Needs. In fact, the government and industry have been paying close attention to the development of Mobility as a Service (MaaS). By combining the concept of MaaS with multiple industries, III tried to find a sustainable business model and further developed the "Intelligent Transportation System Development and Construction Plan", which focuses on ten areas including "MaaS intelligent public transportation service industry, smart electric bus technology industry, smart electric vehicle technology industry, and 5G intelligent transportation experimental field", hoping to further promote the development and transformation of the domestic intelligent transportation industry. It is worth mentioning that last year, Taiwan formulated a major transportation policy in the joint effort of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The world's first " Unmanned Vehicles Technology Innovative Experimentation Act “was implemented in June 2019, encouraging domestic industries to invest in innovative applications of unmanned vehicles. The government plans to put self-driving buses on the roads this year, embracing the arrival of the new era of digital transformation in transportation. The next stage of ITS services will incorporate emerging technologies. Taking into account the core values while developing the applications such as data openness to promote value-added applications, public outsourcing to integrate private resources and creativity, and big data analysis to provide feedback for supporting decision making, the project teams will strive to promote the added value of the industry, expand the breadth and depth of application services, and facilitate the digital transformation of intelligent transportation services that are smarter, safer, more user-friendly, and closer to user needs. 【Media Contact】 Planning & Promotion Division(III) Joy Yen Tel: (02) 6631-8635 joyyen@iii.org.tw Ying Shen Tel: (02) 6631-8643 yingshen@iii.org.tw
