In the view of the potential of AI technology in the medical application field, the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) collaborated with the Computational Intelligence Technology Center, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Digital Transformation Institute (DTI) , Institute for Information Industry to jointly further develop artificial intelligence assistive technologies for medical application. Among them, the "AI Detection Model for Early Breast Lesions", after the transfer of technology to Taiwan’s major medical imaging system manufacturer ” EBM Technologies”, was further developed into the mobile medical image transmission and storage App, Ubiquitous Diagnostic Environment (UDE) App, which was awarded the Bronze Edison Award in the US, setting a new milestone in the field of artificial intelligence medical services in Taiwan.
The award-winning innovative technology“UDE App” is derived from the research and development of medical image AI, which is developed by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs. It is integrated into the iPad pro mobile application service provided by EBM Technologies and is the first to be introduced AI-assisted detection technology for mammography. This technology helps front-line medical staff to deal with suspicious high-risk breast cancer cases in real time, shorten the recall time, and provide specialists with access to medical images for diagnosis anytime, anywhere through portable, offline computing mobile devices. The AI-assisted detection capabilities built into the APP can also greatly reduce the workload of doctors.
In the past, medical imaging software service systems had to be established in various hospitals for system maintenance reasons, which was costly in terms of promotion and difficult to be widely accessible. Along with its development, UDE APP utilizes the universal and convenient mobile device-iPad as the platform, adopting the subscription and update mechanism specialized for APP, which changes the lengthy introduction process of system construction and reduces maintenance labor costs so that the promotion and customer maintenance in international markets could become more efficient and convenient. UDE APP, which has built-in AI breast screening assistant, whose technology transferred from the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs to EBM Technologies, has begun international marketing. Hospitals in Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East have adopted the APP, recognizing the AI research and development strength of Taiwanese companies.
III President CH Cho indicated that in the past III usually participated in international competitions in the name of R&D unit of scientific and technological project results. At current stage, in response to the core positioning of digital transformation enabler, III should be more actively assisting the transformation of collaborative information service providers, strive for international awards, and strategically enter the global market.
Wei-Neng Ding, General Manager of EBM Technologies , also pointed out that he is grateful for the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs developing the key AI technologies required by the industry, which accelerated the entry of associated industries into the medical AI service system and expanded EBM Technologies’ international reputation as well as helped the company entering the international market. EBM Technologies will continue to cooperate with the Institute for Information Industry so that more medical AI services can be developed in Taiwan and then be introduced to the world.
Facing the current situation that Taiwan’s industries are in urgent need of digital transformation, III is committed to assisting companies in choosing the digital transformation model that suits them. In the process of reshaping the industrial value chain, III helps related companies find core values for positioning and hold all the cards. To confront the desperate demand for digital transformation of the industry, III comes up with a blueprint for the development process of digital transformation as well as innovative applications to achieve short, medium and long-term digital transformation goals. The award-winning partner, EBM Technologies, is a leading company in the medical imaging service industry in Taiwan and is also a leader in the domestic medical Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) market. In the innovation process of strategic product development, the management team of EBM Technologies, after working hand in hand with the Digital Transformation Institute (DTI), Institute for Information Industry, embarked on a series of digital transformation tasks focusing on AI-based product development. Since the cooperation between the two units was recognized by the international award this time, both parties are extremely excited and expect to continue their efforts for the development of domestic AI.
