President of ITS Taiwan, Dr. Yi-Fang Shih (middle) bestowed the medal to the representatives of the winning team, III SSI Acting Director Dr. Henry, I-Heng Meng (right) and Chairman of Leon Energy Heng, Lien (left).
According to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation, the average of large vehicle accidents has reached up to 1500 cases per year— collisions caused by blind spots and the difference of radius between inner wheels being the major causes and leading to relatively high fatality rate. To reduce the occurrence of such traffic accidents, under the guidance and support of the science and technology project bolstered by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Institute for Information Industry collaborated with Department of Transportation, Taoyuan and Leon Energy, a system integrator, to collectively develop the “Anti-collision Warning and Braking system for Inner Wheel Radius Difference Blind Spots of Large Vehicles”, which provides blind spot anti-collision intelligent warning and automatic side braking functions for large vehicle drivers, effectively avoiding driving accidents. The system was bestowed the "Smart Transportation Industry Innovation Award" while competing for ITS Taiwan Awards 2021 held by Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan. The award ceremony was held on December 9th, 2021.
Viewing that the automotive electronics and vehicle industries require effective and stable safety solutions for smart driving in the dense traffic environment where mixed traffic flows such as automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles are merged. Since 2018, Smart System Institute (SSI), Institute for Information Industry has been commissioned to develop a number of perception solutions for smart driving by utilizing artificial intelligence image recognition technology and combining it with the self-developed "Formosa Dataset", which contains various weather scenarios, traffic flow simulation, and road hierarchy data up to 100,000 kilometers. Cooperating with domestic governments for a long period of time, SSI has committed to the in-depth industrial development of perception technologies for intelligent vehicles and smart driving and successfully established industrial standards and systems for large vehicles (such as smart buses). At the same time, SSI also proactively encourages the research and development of technologies associated with smart vehicles and smart transportation, promotes technological innovation experiments for unmanned vehicles, and assists the industry in the development of AI Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (AI-ADAS) and perception subsystems of self-driving vehicles.
“Anti-collision Warning and Braking system for Inner Wheel Radius Difference Blind Spots of Large Vehicles” is the world's first AI vehicle blind spot anti-collision active braking technology which—utilizing AI image recognition technology and multi-view image sensing devices to proactively provide warns and automatically brake while objects are detected in the inner wheel difference created blind spots — effectively reduces collision accidents caused by inner wheel difference created blind spots when buses are running and thereby ensures the safety of drivers and pedestrians on the road. In the future, the system will connect to other platforms built by various automotive electronics and in-vehicle system manufacturers in Taiwan and further be applied by other large vehicles (such as trucks, link vehicles, and container trucks), which will strengthen the core competitiveness of Taiwan's industries and expand the niche markets for domestic companies.
III Smart System Institute (SSI) will continue to assist local industries in their digital transformation processes and join hands with the central and local governments to develop local industries with domestic characteristics.
It is expected that in the future, professionals from the industry, government, academia and research can jointly promote technological optimization and industrial digital transformation—with the results being carried out all over the country and even in the markets abroad— to drive business opportunities worth more than 10 billion dollars in output value, create a new blueprint for smart cities, as well as continue to work hard and contribute to Taiwan's industrial upgrading.
