develops the " Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE) System", which uses artificial intelligence deep learning technology to automatically analyze the quality of mammography images, winning the 2022 R&D 100 Awards.
The 2022 R&D 100 Awards, an internationally renowned Oscar-like event in the
science and technology industry, brings together 100 revolutionary technologies from around the world, and officially announced the winning technologies in Taiwan on October 5th. Among the large number of entries from more than a dozen countries, with the support of the science and technology project from the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the " Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE) System" and " Ransomware Intelligent Hunting Platform" developed by the Institute for Information Industry (III) "Software were affirmed by 50 expert judges, and won two awards in the software and services category. "Meta Expert Operational-Maintenance Wizard for Semiconductor Automation Equipment (MEOW)" was also shortlisted. These demonstrate the soft power of Taiwan's information security and medical revolutionary technology.
The Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) starts from the needs of the industry and supports the technology research and development of the Institute for Information Industry with scientific and technological projects. From the information security issues of ransomware attacks that the world has paid much attention to in recent years, to breast lesions, a disease with a high incidence in Taiwan, III spares no effort in the research of AI-assisted interpretation. The two cases won this year's R&D 100 Awards in the United States, which not only demonstrated Taiwan's industrial R&D and innovation capabilities in the technology field, but also facilitated industrial upgrading and transformation through new service models. The process is an actual reflection of what the R&D 100 Awards jury mentioned, "The award-winning technologies are innovative technologies that will be highly influential in the industry in the next few years."
Ren-Dar Yang, Executive Vice President of the Institute for Information Industry (III), indicated that in recent years, there have been frequent hacking incidents of global critical infrastructure. Technological progress has brought many benefits, but it has also created new risks and cyber threats. Starting from creating a safe and reliable digital environment, III realizes the importance of developing an AI security platform for cross-domain defense. In the process of corporate organization strengthening and data management, new technologies are also used in combination with health data. Therefore, the process of mammography which used to rely on manual inspection is now introduced into AI technology to assist in interpretation, helping drive the transformation of the medical industry. It is an honor for the two cases to be recognized by 2022 R&D 100 Awards this year.
In the future, III will continue to stay as a third-party promoter to assist the industry in digital transformation, create economic value, and solve social problems.
Hackers Nowhere to Hide! Cyber Trust Technology Institute (CTTI) Develops "Ransomware Intelligent Hunting Platform", Winning 2022 R&D 100 Award.
According to the industry observation of the Cyber Trust Technology Institute (CTTI) of the Institute for Information Industry (III), the reason why most of the key infrastructures are hacked is the lack of attack chain identification technology that combines real-time intelligence and AI-assisted technologies. In order to prevent information security threats in advance, the Cyber Trust Technology Institute (CTTI) utilizes AI technology to actively profile hacker attack routes, conduct virus code analysis and comparison, as well as estimate the paths of the attacks to create a one-stop "Ransomware Intelligent Hunting Platform".
The platform has a built-in self-developed AI-assisted malicious behavior detection model, and after evaluation, it has been able to grasp up to 91% of ransomware viruses. In addition, this platform also provides a user-friendly UI operation interface. As long as the specific file is selected, users can scan the file through API. Automatically, the platform compiles the information security detection result report, so that anti-virus units can gather the file information comprehensively and effectively prevent the occurrence of blackmail threats.
Because of the rampant ransomware, in the hacker circle, the trend of ransomware as a RaaS service has been developed. Therefore, "Ransomware Intelligent Hunting Platform" is also cooperating with start-ups in the financial field, with the goal of establishing a zero-ransomware cloud service environment, providing users with safe and convenient services. In the future, this technology will be deployed in government, finance, and manufacturing units, and through cooperation with the information service providers, it will protect the digital assets of the industry by a zero-trust model. For these reasons, it was favored by judges and awarded the R&D 100 Award.
III Software Technology Institute (STI) Develops "Mammography Quality Evaluation (MQE) System" to Transform the Smart Medical Industry
Another award-winning technology that was highly praised by the judges, "Mammography Quality Evaluation System (MQE)", was developed by the Software Technology Institute (STI), Institute for Information Industry (III), and jointly promoted with EBM Technologies, a domestic medical materials company. The system utilizes artificial intelligence deep learning technology to automatically analyze the quality of mammogram images, which is helpful to solve the current shooting quality problems, accounting for 20% of the total problems of breast X-ray pictures. With an accuracy of more than 80%, MQE can not only provide radiologists with the warning signs of unqualified images in real time, but also can offer objective shooting suggestions to improve the shooting process. In addition to real-time analysis, this system can also evaluate the quality of breast photography offline, assisting the hospital to train radiologists so that their quality analysis and shooting skills of breast photography could be improved.
According to statistics from the Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of breast cancer screening cases in 2018 has already exceeded 860,000. To help increase the number of screening cases, III Software Technology Institute(STI), develops the deep learning technology MQE, which is able to accurately analyze 11 mammograms quality evaluation indicators, greatly improve the quality and speed of screening, and assist radiologists to improve mammograms shooting process. Furthermore, MQE could shorten the amount of time for people to obtain their reports and enable early treatment for people at high risk of cancer.
MQE won the award through the technical demonstration in cooperation with various medical institutions. To shorten the medical gap between urban and rural areas, the system not only is utilized in radiology clinics in hospitals, but also applied by mammography tour vehicles in remote areas so that the quality of mammography images could be guaranteed, the recall and retake frequency of breast images could be reduced, medical human resources could be used more effectively, and the quality of medical treatment could be significantly improved.
It is worth mentioning that the output value of Taiwan's semiconductor industry ranks second in the world. III Digital Transformation Research Institute (DTRI) aimed at the pain points of the semiconductor industry, such as insufficient supply, time-consuming order completion and product delivery, as well as sudden maintenance-requiring equipment failure, and developed the "Meta Expert Operational-Maintenance Wizard for Semiconductor Automation Equipment (MEOW)". The system uses multiple sensors on the machine tools to capture the signals of the overall production process for analysis, and to grasp the health status of these machine tools at any time. Furthermore, MEOW can use the AI model to provide warning signals in advance and avoid unexpected shutdown. In addition to improving product processing accuracy, this system can also be used for pre-planning with maintenance schedules to achieve the purpose of improving production efficiency on the production line. This technology was also affirmed by the judges and listed as one of the finalists of this award.
This year, the R&D 100 Awards is entering its 60th year, and there are no signs showing a decrease in the number of contestants even during the period of Covid-19 pandemic.
Since 2011, the year III started to participate in the event, 12 III-developed technologies have won awards and 10 technologies have been shortlisted. The popularity of III has grown accordingly, and these new inventions have also demonstrated the research and development capabilities of the teams from Taiwan. In recent years, digital transformation has been the most important issue for the industries of Taiwan. The Institute for Information Industry has the task to promote the issue as a neutral and credible third party and will gradually assist the society of Taiwan in walking on the digital transformation road to success.
