Kuwait KISR Reverse Engineering Unit (REU)
Project name: Reverse Engineering Unit Consulting Project
Client: Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR)
Project Duration: (2014-2015)
Project descriptions:
Introduction / Background:
The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is a long-standing partner with III. In Kuwait, the “maintenance service industry” is mostly provided by foreign companies, sometimes at a high cost for timely service for the parts procurement process. In some cases, it may be necessary to establish new equipment procurement because the original manufacturers stopped producing certain parts. KISR was requested by the State of Kuwait to help foster a domestic reverse engineering industry to produce parts in a low cost and less time consuming manner, with further development in forward engineering to enhance the parts for better performance.
Issues that need to be solved:
- Kuwait had challenges with obtaining spare and replacement parts for equipment due to high prices, long delivery timeframes, and/or discontinuing of certain parts from the original manufacturers.
- KISR had an existing workshop which covered basic maintenance services for KISR’s laboratories, but they enlisted Taiwan’s team to help them build up their reverse engineering capabilities.
- KISR needed to upgrade their reverse engineering facilities including the procurement of new equipment.
- KISR needed to recruit and train new staff members for the reverse engineering unit.
Objectives:
The project objectivesare to establish a highly professional and fully functional reverse engineering unit. According to the ISO standards, at the conclusion of this project phase, KISR’s Reverse Engineering Unit will be furnished with the latest equipment, instruments and engineering software such as 3D, CAD, CAM, CAE, etc., capable of delivering high quality product prototypes as well as blueprints for potential commercialization purposes.
Major Tasks:
Recruitment of new permanent KISR staff for REU.
Equipment verification, commissioning and preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
REU operation and capacity development.
Benefits:
The REU consulting team has verified and prepared SOPs for over 20 major equipment items during theexecution of the project. This has also included skills training for the REU staff.
REU has identified and confirmed three study cases to produce for the following research centers within KISR as initial projects: the Energy and Building Research Center (EBRC), the Water Research Center (WRC), and the Petroleum Research Center (PRC). Upon the successful completion of these projects, we plan to collaborate with other research centers within and outside of KISR for future projects.
