III Survey: 930,000 People Use Intelligent Wearable Devices and Smart Band Listed the Most Popular. More than Half of the Users Focus on Functional Demand such as “Health Information Update” and “Sport Efficiency Enhancement”.

With the sensation aroused by the launch of Apple watch and Android watch, two domestic well known PC brands, ASUS and Acer, announced their strategic plan to enter the battle field of wearable devices in addition to the existing familiar names such as Mi, Garmin, Samsung, and SONY. Among the products developed by these companies, Acer Liquid Leap Active got into Christmas Gift rush and set the top sale one day record of 70 thousand per day in December 2015. HTC has no intention to be left behind. Its HTC Vive intrigued agitate discussion after the launch on 18th December, 2015. While HTC Vive headset, wireless controllers, and motion tracking boxes have been certified by FCC, the second generation developer version is expected to come out on CES in 2016. The increasing number of international brands devoting to the wearable device market shows the enormous demand and business opportunity lying behind.
To understand the current market situation of wearable devices, III Innovative DigiTech-Enabled Applications & Services Institute (IDEAS) FIND team bolstered by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs published the result of its survey on 30th 2015, which indicated that in Taiwan, about 930,000 people have wearable devices in 2015. The number accounted for 4% of that of the total population and increased by 2.3% in comparison to 1,7% last year. Among the target customers of wearable devices, fresh graduates between the age of 25 and 29 are the main focus groups.
In fact, of all the devices, smart band dominated the market with the market share of 68.3% and smart watch came the second with 40.4% while the market share of the other devices such as glasses and shoes are all below 5%. In addition to smart band which is more acceptable to regular people nowadays, III IDEAS FIND team also predicted that smart watch will be the next international trend of the wearable device market in the near future.

What worth mentioning is that the functional capabilities of wearable devices become the most important purchase discretion in addition to the shape for accessories. Among the users, up to 58.5% use these devices everyday. 64.8% of the users indicate that smart wearable devices can help them exercise more efficiently. 54.2 % make use of the devices to regularly track physical health information. 47.9% of the owners believe that the wearable devices are capable of providing reminders in their daily lives. 41.1% of the device holders view these devices as gadgets accessing to other equipment such as smart phones. Obviously, “grasping personal health information” and “increasing exercise efficiency” are two of the most imperative purposes for smart wearable device owners to flick the switch.

After further analyzing customer demand, III IDEAS Analyst Ching-Cheng, Han suggests participants in this industry can try to integrate more daily life information in the wearable device developing process, connect and maneuver more devices, or even combine with entertainment functions or mobile APPs in addition to the continuous development of physical measurement functions so as to design the service to better fit wearable device application circumstances. On the flip side, while the frequency of using social networking websites and instant message soft-wares increases dramatically, how to integrate the functions of them will inevitably become the vital task waiting to be solved in order to create the potential market for wearable devices.

Survey methodology: Target all Taiwanese and conduct random sampling telephone interview by household. Survey areas are at the counties around Taiwan including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taichung City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Kinmen County, Lianjiang County and the other 15 counties. Use random sampling and classify the population of the area into 22 sections according to county boundaries. Randomly pick required numbers of samples. The number of successful survey samples is 4026. Under 95% confidence level, this statistical survey has a sampling error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
