Developed by III Smart System Institute (SSI), Smart Glasses System Remote Master won Mobile Excellence Award from 2017 WCIT. III SSI Vice Director Wen-Chen Ho (Left) and Team Leader Ching-Wen Lin presented at site to receive the award.
This year, the 21st World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT 2017) was held in Taiwan at Taipei International Convention Center from September 10th to 13th. Guided by Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Economic Affairs and recommended by Information Service Industry Association of R.O.C. (CISA), III Digital Service Innovation Institute (DSI) and Smart System Institute (SSI), by Smart Footwear Platform SaFePlay and Remote Master respectively, won the Innovative eHealth Solutions Award and Mobile Excellence Award from World Information Technology & Service Alliance (WITSA), which used to be known as the Olympic of Information Technology.

Smart Insole and Smart Knee Brace Awarded Innovative eHealth Solutions Award
Shih-Yao Wei, Leader of the Research and Development team of III Digital Service Innovation Institute (DSI), expressed, " I think there should be a more objective approach to conduct the monitoring and analysis of daily lower limb movement so as to help normal individuals to understand the conditions of their bodies and further establish their routines for rehabilitation. Nowadays, researchers dedicated to lower limb gait measuring mostly use large scale fixed gait experiment equipment to carry out experiments and rehabilitation tracking. Therefore, patients are travel worn because they need to visit the experiment center in person. The process requires the assistance of professional personnel. Also, rehabilitation centers are burdened with high cost and faced with the multiple constrains of the field and equipment. The lack of all environment, 24-7, objective data obtained from daily routine monitoring often leads to the limited effectiveness for tracking patients' physical conditions as well as their rehabilitation progress.
Researched and Developed by III, Smart Footwear Platform (SaFePlay) broke through barriers of traditional approach and integrated wearable devices and information analysis and feedback technologies associated with foot mechanics so as to penetrate the market by all environment, multiple data, and consistent lower limb gait measurement services. The system includes smart insole and smart knee brace on which sensors are installed. By connecting the data collecting smart devices on patients with specially designed APP linking to cloud platform, the system could provide immediately bio-mechanic analysis information and integrate it with video games to increase users' willingness to rehabilitate as well as to improve the effectiveness of recovery. After winning Red Dot Awards in 2016 and US R&D 100 in 2017, the system once again got recognition and was awarded by the "Innovative eHealth Solutions Award" from WITSA this year!
Leader of the Research and Development team of III Digital Service Innovation Institute (DSI), Shih-Yao Wei, indicated that the inspiration of Smart Footwear Platform (SaFePlay) came from previous personal experience regarding sport injuries as well as the requirement of rehabilitation. He expected that the platform could provide users with tools similar to traditional bio-mechanic measuring equipment and, at the same time, update doctors with the latest information by monitoring patients' physical conditions and rehabilitation progress.
The innovation applied the resources from the academic, medicare, and research fields to the establishment of the mechanism for building up cross domain, software and hardware integrated critical knowledge partnership. The outcome of the project is astonishing. In the future, the technologies related to this project will be applied to other domains such as medicare and sport so as to collect associated mechanic data regarding users' actions and movements on a large scale and continually upgrade the algorithm and applications in association with data analysis. Meanwhile, III is proactively working with various organizations ranging from sports equipment/ brand companies, assistive technology device firms, and medicare units to software and hardware companies in the hope that SaFePlay will be introduced into professional working fields. It is expected that these devices could be promoted by professionals to health concerned and sports groups so as to boost the upgrading of information analysis service industry and eventually come up with solutions regarding Sensor-based personal commerce, which are able to integrate with related industries such as health protection, medicare, insurance, sports, etc. By leading the innovation of hardware services through software value adding, a more mature wearable device market is currently merging.
Smart Glasses Constantly Won Global Awards, with Comprehensive Application Fields Covering Manufacturing, Cultural Creative, and Medicare Industry.
Developed by III, Remote Master has been applied to the real situation at one of the fields of China Steel Corporation. Combining Dynamic Object Tracking Technology with Information Overlay Technology, the device integrates professional helmets with smart glasses so as to clearly mark out the spots on equipment where overhauling is required and to provide staffs with operation guidance regarding working processes. Accordingly, the efficiency increases dramatically and the operation cost decreases by 20 percent. Furthermore, by using the device, it is possible to monitor onsite working staffs remotely to guarantee their safety. The device won Mobile Excellence Award from WITSA in 2017. After R&D 100 Awards in 2016, this is the second time III smart glasses team got global recognition.
In the field of cultural creative industry, III Smart System Institute (SSI) worked with National Palace Museum in "Giuseppe Castiglione – Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition” in 2015. The exhibition created new touring experience by smart glasses. Putting on smart glasses, visiting guests of the exhibition could enjoy multimedia touring information constituted by words, voices, and videos from a first person perspective. With the help of the device, the exhibition was awarded the 49th World Fest-Houston International Film Festival Grand Remi Award and won Muse Award from AAM in the category of interpretive interaction device.
Through the cooperation with Show Chwan Memorial Hospital in Chang Hua, the smart glasses team entered medicare field and helped orthopedic surgeons to accurately find out the locations for placing the cut with Mixed Reality(MR) technologies, which decreases the operation time significantly by 30% and increases the efficiency and accuracy of the operations at the same time. The technologies are also favored by Discovery Channel. In its 2016 documentary "Taiwan Revealed: Medical Elite", the medical strength of Taiwan is completely presented.
Ching-Wen Lin, team leader of III Smart System Institute, expressed that the goal of the team is to create an application paradigm for domestically produced smart glasses by integrating software and hardware technologies. Further, the system is also expected to be able to greatly increase working efficiency. Looking into the future, members of Remote Master team hope that the product could enter a wide range of industries, create various cooperation opportunities, and come up with multiple ways for application. By this approach, there is the possibility for Taiwan to create a whole new experience integrating software and hardware technologies and therefore to forge the value chain for smart glasses industries with competitiveness for the future.
