The “IDEAS Show” is entering its 11th consecutive year and it continues to be an influential event in the startup circle. IDEAS Show 2018 was held on the 24th of July. More than 40 domestic and international startups participated in the 6-minute pitch competition in this year alone. dipp, Uspace, Olis Innovation, Toss Lab, Luxrobo and EzQ Company are awarded as the outstanding startups that were honored with our annual awards, signifying that the Digital Economy is the most popular entrepreneurial theme of 2018.
In the development of the Digital Economy, the IDEAS Show project has partnered with entrepreneurial resources, such as VCs and accelerators for Taiwanese startups. The International Division of Institute for Information Industry (III), under the support of the MOEA, organized the event in collaboration with APEC, with the name”IDEAS Show 2018”. These startups originate from 7 countries, including Taiwan, Korea, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. The major focus of 2018 was “Innovative Services & Business Application”, aiming to assist startups to attract media attention and investment, as well as to showcase their innovations to the global market.
Among the winning teams, three are from Taiwan, dipp, the company behind the SaaS marketing creative automation platform, helping business with digital advertising and social media engagement; Uspace, private parking space sharing provider which is controlled by its IoT device called 'ULOCK'' to allow the owner to share their parking space; and Olis Innovation, a CRM and marketing SaaS, using big data and AI to help offline businesses manage and retarget their customers through LINE and FB chatbots. In addition, the international startups also impressed the audience with extraordinary business innovations such as Toss Lab, an office messenger providing effective and efficient communication at workplaces; Luxrobo, a magnetic modular device for the building and connecting of DIY IoT and robotic creations, and EzQ Company, providing an ecosystem for online merchants, shippers and buyers.
In the welcome address, presented by Ms. Wang Mei-Hua, Vice Minister of the MOEA, she highlighted that there are many enthusiastic and talented individuals and enterprises in Taiwan, which play important roles in the development of the Digital Economy. In order to give new enterprises more support, earlier this month, Taiwan has completed the largest revamp in the Company Act to boost corporate governance and ease rules on fundraising. This is a significant change, aiming to clear financing roadblocks, which entrepreneurs previously faced when launching new startups. It is designed to inject more kinetic energy into their development.
Mr. Raphael Uranguai, representative of Papua New Guinea from the APEC ECSG (Electronic Commerce Steering Group), reiterated that developing the Digital Economy is APEC 2018’s Policy Priority, targeting to harness inclusive opportunities and embrace the digital future. Taking inspiration from the ADOC (APEC Digital Opportunity Center) project, which is executed by III, it starts with the most basic skills and access to Internet while utilizing digital tools. Now it allows our youth to live their dreams and express their creativity. This is not only for promoting commercial activities but also concurrently to relieve social issues. The PNG startups’ attendance today at this event is a direct result of the ADOC seed that has been planted in Papua New Guinea, which is a significant milestone.
For enabling the startups to better understand the startup ecosystem, III especially invited Mr. Christian Knipfer, Manager of International & Government Relations of Plug&Play (USA) who gave a keynote speech. He expressed how to tap into the Global Innovation Ecosystem, from the corporate and startup perspective. In one panel discussion, Protostar Program of LINE introduced a program on how to help businesses gain access to an extensive network of LINE users, aiming to boost their visibility and sales. Meanwhile, TaxiGo and 5Breakfast shared how to buy your breakfast quickly and book a taxi directly on the LINE platform. In the “APEC Entrepreneurship Resources and Keys to Success” panel discussion, Mr. Pavel Laletin (TechGrind’s (Thailand) General Partner, Co-founder and COO), Mr. Thach Le Anh (VIETNAM SILICON VALLEY’s Founder), Mr. Jae RO (Born2Global’s (Korea) Director), and Mr. Jacky Laverty (Creative HQ’s (NZ) Head of Venture Management and Investment), explored the point that it is essential that startups exchange information internationally, and pointed out that the ecosystem of entrepreneur is flourishing in their own countries. Startups continue to expand their market into other Asian countries, and they also considered that the keys to success for startups are supports from the governments, funding from investors and understanding of consumers’ demand. The agreed concept is that the essence is team work. Startups from Taiwan are very welcome to expand their ideas and innovations into their local markets.
In the future, III will continue to expand IDEAS Show at year twelve, to bring together startup strengths, introduce international resources and experiences, and promote startups to the international arena. Furthermore, we strive to facilitate more proof of services in the market for greater innovation.
