Taiwan's smart transportation technology has once again been recognized internationally. To improve road safety for drivers and pedestrians, under the guidance of the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), TranXonSafe, the intelligent road safety warning system developed by the Smart System Institute (SSI) of the Institute for Information Industry, won the 2022 Artificial Intelligence Excellence Award(*Note), peering with world-renowned AI giants such as IBM and Deloitte AI Institute in the same event and same year.

Setting up cameras at intersections, “TranXonSafe” uses AI technology as the core and integrates communication technology, sensors, traffic signs and other equipment, to determine the accident-causing risk factors by AI image recognition technology, such as vehicles in blind spots and unseen pedestrians or vehicles blocked by objects, etc. and to provide early warning of high-risk events so that the number of traffic accidents could be reduced. This system is the world's first traffic solution that can support the identification of mixed traffic flows and provide accident early warning. The most distinct feature of this system is that it supports all-weather mixed traffic image recognition, which can recognize 10 types more than those recognized by other international systems, while maintaining a recognition rate of more than 90% in various weather environments (night, rain or fog).

Henry Meng, the Acting Director of the Smart System Institute (SSI), said that the reason why “TranXonSafe” can stand out from many competitors around the world is that it comes from the care for "vulnerable road users", such as motorcycles and pedestrians. The starting point of this system is to improve the safety of drivers and pedestrians, and, at the same time, reduce the accident rate at intersections. At present, the system has been deployed in actual fields for verification testing in Nei-hu District and Yang-de Blvd. in Taipei, as well as Qing-pu and other places in Tao-yuan. The system uses AI technology to detect vehicle motion status, and instantly alerts passersby about upcoming events. Through big data analysis, the experiment on Yang-de Blvd. can reduce the accident rate by about 15%. In addition, this system has also been introduced into Ping-jen areas in Tao-yuan to assist technology law enforcement practitioners. The system uses image recognition and object tracking technology to ban illegal vehicles in real time and around the clock. The recognition rate of the correct license plate is 96%, which will improve people's willingness to drive in compliance with regulations and prevent violations and accidents from happening.

With the technology special project, the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) supports the Institute for Information Industry to invest in the technology development of domestic smart transportation. The project not only devotes resources to forward-looking technologies which are not seen in the industry but also continues to generate solutions and field verification based on the needs of society and people. Additionally, cross-border and cross-domain cooperation are promoted so that
the innovation energy of the domestic industry could continuously be accumulated, and the upgrading, transformation and development of the related fields could be accelerated. This "TranXonSafe" not only reduces the accident rate at intersections, but also promotes domestic industries associated with the fields such as smart roadside CCTVs, industrial computers, advanced sensing equipment and AI technology through the development of integrated smart roadside facilities. In addition to assisting the digital transformation of traditional equipment manufacturers and OEMs, III also opens up a new blue ocean of smart transportation and moves towards the direction of being an advanced system integrator.
